Discrimination And Discrimination Within The Workplace

Introduction Discrimination is defined as making a distinction in favor of or against a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs to rather than on individual merit (definition 2). Discrimination does not just relate to just one meaning but several, and it can be described in many ways. This action is not only offensive but hurtful as well. Denying any individual a job because of their race, sexual orientation, religion, or gender is an example of discrimination. Treating people poorly or misjudging individuals due to their race or gender is also a form of discrimination. The public eye fails to realize that discrimination has led to many individuals quitting their jobs or, worse, doing harm to the aggressor or themselves. There are several methods of discriminating in the workforce. The most prominent form of discrimination within the workplace is based on a person’s gender--typically in the form of men discriminating against women, thus preventing them from attaining certain jobs in the workplace. Society has made it clear that men are considered the more dominant figures and that they should be privileged to all jobs. Women, seen as the weaker sex, are passed over for unqualified men, thereby perpetuating this cycle of privilege. Discrimination can also occur against different age groups. Both the youth and elderly have a hard time being taken seriously when applying for jobs. Each is an issue.
